Learn how to easily clean the brick fireplace in your home with the following steps. Removing soot from the fireplace's interior will prevent respiratory problems, prevent soot deposits from forming in portions of your home, and will restore the beauty of your fireplace.

Materials

  • rubber gloves
  • face mask
  • vinyl tarp
  • wire brush
  • coffee grounds
  • broom
  • shovel
  • trash bag
  • scrub brush
  • bucket of warm, soapy water
  • bleach
  • sponge
  • towel
  • vacuum cleaner

Sweep Ashes And Remove Soot From The Bricks

Put on a pair of gloves and a face mask to prevent your hands from becoming dirty and to reduce the risk of breathing in the soot that is being removed. Place a vinyl tarp in front of the fireplace. Use a wire brush to remove soot from the interior, fireplace walls. Begin at the top of each wall and work your way downwards as you move the brush briskly back and forth over the bricks.

Pour used coffee grounds over the ashes that are on the bottom of the fireplace. The weight of the grounds will prevent the ashes from blowing around as you are sweeping them up. Use a broom to sweep the ashes, soot, and coffee grounds into a shovel. Place all of these materials in a trash bag.

Eliminate Surface Stains And Vacuum

Fill a bucket with warm water. Add a cup or two of industrial strength detergent to it. Apply the warm, soapy water to a scrub brush. Remove surface stains from the bricks by moving the scrub brush firmly over each one. Begin at the top of the fireplace walls so that dirty water and debris drips downwards. If any of the bricks are severely stained, pour a small amount of bleach into the soapy water to strengthen the cleaning solution.

Once the bricks are clean, rinse the bricks off with a wet sponge and dry them with a towel. Sweep up any debris that has fallen onto the floor while you were cleaning the fireplace and dispose of it. Use the hose attachment on a vacuum cleaner to remove any debris that you missed inside of the fireplace.

Maintain The Fireplace

Maintain the fireplace by wiping off the brick walls and sweeping up ashes several times each year. Hire a professional chimney cleaning service to inspect the chimney and clean it once each year. All of these steps will keep the fireplace in excellent shape so that you can enjoy using it whenever you would like to heat up the inside of your home.

About Me

Everyone Should Have a Bathroom They Love

I once read that the average person spend about 1.5 years of their life in the bathroom, although I think I will spend much more time than that in my life! I enjoy taking long, hot baths. After I recently moved into a new home, I quickly realized that I didn't find bath time as relaxing when I spent it in a bathroom I didn't love. I soon decided to renovate the bathroom, and that was the best decision I made in years. I added his and hers sinks and the large bath tub I had always wanted! I want to inspire others to look at how their home affects their mood and stress levels. No one should have a bathroom they don't love or live in a home they don't love. I plan to share my home remodeling tips on my new blog, so come back for remodeling inspiration!
